December 2020: Brave new world-Saturn and Jupiter enter Aquarius

We have finally reached the last month of a difficult and troubling year. This month will bring the most significant aspects of the year and propel us into a new period which will spark an enormous amount of change in the world and our own lives. 2021 will be a new frontier.

Jupiter and Saturn enter Aquarius signaling a shift in energies that will indicate a new and far different future from what we have been dealing with the last few years. Mars, the action planet continues its transit through Aries for a final 6 weeks. Venus, the planetary ruler of love and values travels through Scorpio and Sagittarius. The Sagittarius season will continue the first three weeks of December until the Sun enters Capricorn on December 21st bringing the winter equinox. We will experience a significant solar eclipse on December 14th and a powerful full moon on December 29th.

Saturn’s last dance in Capricorn

Saturn entered Capricorn December 21st, 2017 for the first time in 30 years and is now at the end of its two and a half year cycle. Saturn is at home in this sign making it very powerful. It’s conjunction with Pluto in early January revealed the Covid pandemic, and Pluto’s conjunction to Jupiter in Capricorn increased Covid and brought about significant and dark political power struggles in the US. We have experienced a recession each time Saturn has been in Capricorn for the last 100 years and we are now in a Covid recession. This is a Saturn cycle many will be happy to see come to an end, in particular those born under the Cardinal signs of Capricorn, Cancer, Libra and Aries who have had an especially difficult time.

Saturn enters Aquarius

December 17th, Saturn enters Aquarius, followed by Jupiter on December 19th. Saturn is called the taskmaster in astrology and is typically concerned with boundaries, work and achievement. Saturn teaches people to work through limitations, obligations and adversity. There is always a focus on the sign and house Saturn travels through both in our personal charts and on a global level. If Saturn makes easy aspects we have gain with a great deal of work. If Saturn makes harsher aspects with other planets we typically have some type of obstacle to overcome. Saturn last transited through Aquarius February 6, 1991-January 29, 1994. If you are old enough to remember this time you may have an idea as to how this Saturn cycle will affect you on a personal level.

Aquarius is a futuristic sign that builds with a vision toward the future. The planetary rulers of Aquarius are Saturn and Uranus. As Saturn rules the Democratic Party, Joe Biden will take office January 20th, 2021 and the Biden administration will be of a Saturn/Uranus nature. Saturn represents structures and building but Uranus is the planet of technology, cutting edge medicines, science, and ideas that are at times of genius quality. But, Uranus is also unpredictable, changeable and in some cases explosive, so some unexpected situations will also arise over the next several years.

Aquarius rules the 11th house or the collective and groups.  During this Saturn period we will all be working to find our own place within the collective and with Saturn in this sign, the collective will make their voices heard. We experienced a brief period of Saturn in Aquarius from March 23-July 1, this year. That period involved the Covid shut down and after the death of George Floyd the collective expressed its voice in terms of protest and demands for change on many levels.  This Saturn cycle will bring more structure as to the way we deal with the pandemic.  As Aquarius rules the collective, the next several years will be structured to control the virus among the populations.

Aquarius is connected with humanity and those things we all share as inhabitants of the planet. This includes the planet itself and issues of survival such as enough food, healthcare and a desire to build our own life on our terms within the collective, as well as the betterment of all mankind.

Aquarius is revolutionary, rebellious and analytical, detached and employs reason over emotionally based decisions and ideas. Aquarius is not afraid to question the powers that be while putting the collective welfare at the top of ideals and plans.

Aquarius is connected to cutting edge technologies and ideas, air and spacecraft, internet, electronic and medical technologies, science and academics and allegiance to a religion or idea which can turn out well, or badly.

The darker side of Aquarius is that it can be erratic, self-absorbed, tactless and more focused on the collective rather than individuals. Aquarius is an Air sign so reason supersedes emotion and Aquarius is not known for its personal warmth. Abraham Lincoln was one of the most famous Aquarians and his focus was clearly on the collective as he led the US through the Civil War of the 1880’s.

Jupiter enters Aquarius

Jupiter is the planet of gain and expansion, optimism and abundance and joins Saturn in Aquarius two days after Saturn enters the same sign. Jupiter in Aquarius is futuristic, revolutionary and concerned with fairness and social justice. Jupiter’s expansive and freewheeling nature will work well in the sign that is concerned with humanitarian interests, independence, freedom and innovation. All of this will be far different energy than Jupiter in Capricorn. We will be more concerned with new ideas, novel approaches and doing things our own way.

Jupiter conjuncts Saturn in Aquarius

On December 21st Jupiter meets up in the sky with Saturn and the two form a conjunction which means they are together or side by side. This is one of the most important cycles in terms of major changes in the world, and civilization. Some astrologers consider this cycle the foundation upon which the world is built. Aquarius represents futuristic energies and unexpected twists. It has been said this cycle is considered the ground base of human development which marks the interaction between the perception of ideas, potentialities and the manifestation of ideas in the concrete material world. We well feel and see the results of these two energies in the weeks before and after the planets are conjunct. Jupiter joins Saturn once every 20 years. The Saturn-Jupiter conjunctions occur in the same element for long periods of time. This 20 year conjunction marks a 200 year change from the Earth signs-Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn to Air signs which is very significant.

The solar eclipse in Sagittarius

On December 14th, we will experience a solar eclipse at 23 degrees of Sagittarius. The energies of this eclipse will be expansive, energizing and we will be more prone to trying something different and adventurous. Sagittarius is all about finding the truth. In astrology a solar eclipse can be something of a turning point and decisions made at this point can have long lasting implications in the future.

Solar eclipses repeat themselves every 19 years, so the last time we experienced an eclipse like this was December 14, 2001.

Venus sextiles Jupiter putting a pleasant spin on things and this is indicative of pleasure, harmony and social events. As this eclipse joins Mercury it will relate to how we think and communicate. As it is also in positive aspect to Mars it will give you the energy to act toward your goals.

A harsh aspect to Neptune however, means you must protect yourself from lies, deception and mistruths as well as the cornavirus. This can make you feel confused, weak and lethargic. With Mercury also square Neptune, use caution in terms of any business dealings or opportunity that may arise and make certain it is legitimate.

In the US chart this eclipse squares Neptune meaning we will be dealing with confusion, lack of clarity and an increase in Covid cases if not deaths. There will be angry energies present in the US along with the potential for misdirection, lies and power struggles.

Saturn and Jupiter in Capricorn

December 14th is the day the electors cast their ballots and announce their choice for President. It is over the next few days that Jupiter and Saturn will meet up in Capricorn for a few days. While Jupiter and Saturn do not make an exact conjunction as they do in Aquarius on December 21st, this is still significant as they are so close and will mark the end of the Trump era. Saturn and Jupiter are both at 29 degrees, which is considered an anaretic degree. This is considered to relate to desperate situations and is of karmic significance.

Mars squares Pluto

December 23rd, Mars squares Pluto for the final time. This occurred earlier on October 9th and August 13th. Both times we saw volatility in the US and the world as well as power struggles and scandals and there is little doubt it will work out like this again. Use care and caution in your dealings with others as at this time as arguments can erupt, power struggles can occur, and it may seem like a bubbling over of tension. This transit can relate to crime and violence at worst as it did in August when we learned of the diabolical plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor.

Final full moon of the year

December 29th, a full moon falls at 8 degrees of Cancer. Cancer represents the 4th house in astrology or the placement for home and family. As we are still in the holiday period, many will be with family at this time. Cancer is the most emotional of planets, and a Cancer full moon can predispose some to acting out in an overly emotional way. Of course, this can also be a beautiful full moon indicative of spending much needed time with loved ones especially as this moon makes no harsh aspects other than Venus’s square to Neptune which can represent soft lights and reverie or alternatively lies, misunderstandings and misconceptions about things.

Other transits of interest in December:

December 1st, Mercury, the planet of communication enters Sagittarius through December 20th. Expect communication to shit and become more expansive, curious and broader and more upbeat in nature. The downside of Mercury in this sign deals with over promising, being too scattered and unable to hone down ideas to basic details.

December 9th, the Sun squares Neptune. This can be a confusing if not tiring day. Watch for misunderstandings or lack of clarity in communication and thinking.

December 13th, Mercury squares Neptune. Much the same as the Sun square Neptune except this specifically relates to conversation and communication as well as travel and caution is advised while driving. It may seem difficult to relate to situations clearly on this day.

December 15th, the planet of love (Venus) enters Sagittarius. Look for your love life to take on a more spontaneous and adventurous turn. Sagittarius is about the adventure much more than a commitment. Enjoy this for what it is and be open to different scenarios.

December 20th, Mercurial energy changes again as the planet of communication enters Capricorn. Capricorn is grounded and practical so expect communication and thinking to take a turn in this direction. It will be the antithesis of Mercury in Sagittarius.

December 20th the Sun enters Capricorn and the yearly Capricorn season in on. Capricorn represents true winter when there is no doubt about the weather changing. Cappy rules the 10th house of work and priorities and it is here our interests will lie for the next 30 days.

December 30th, Venus squares Neptune and for some New Years Eve will begin early. This can be pleasant energy associated with things of a Neptunian nature: drinking, partying and escaping from reality. The downside is carelessness, over-indulging, and lies and deception or misunderstandings. Use care with this transit.
